PI MAI PI MAI TANG TU VS JENAKA KAMPUNG KALUT (JKK)

Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu and Jenaka Kampung Kalut (JKK) both are sitcom comedy that was aired on TV3. Each of this series has its own specialty even though we could see they are pretty similar. So here we will identify genre approaches between the series since they have the same concept but came from different era. Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu was produced in 1985 until 2004 under Cinematic Sdn Bhd. It has 17 seasons with 1,210 episodes in total. The cast for this series is Imuda, Allahyarham Zami Ismail, Allahyarham Mohammad Abdullah, Wan Maimunah, Sathiya, Angeline Tan, Ahmad Busu and many more. Meanwhile Jenaka Kampung Kalut or known as JKK was produced in 2016 until 2019 under Primeworks Studios. It has 5 seasons with 65 episodes in total. The cast for this series is Ropie Cecupak, Ebby Yus, Jep Sepahtu, Sari Yanti, Issey Fazlisham and many more. Without further ado, let us study about genre approaches between them. We have three types of genre approaches which is aesthetic, ritual and ideological.
Aesthetic is actually a combination of many types of genre in one product (film, drama, or series). In Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu, we could see the hybrid of genre like sitcom, sketch and comedy. This is usually a common genre that any sitcom or comedy program from that era will serve to the audience. As the time past by, sitcom does change its game plan a little bit. We could see it in Jenaka Kampung Kalut where they still maintain the combination of sketch, sitcom and comedy but they also add another genre that commonly used for today entertainment which is satire. Satire is actually a humorous way to educate or criticized. Actually, Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu also have this genre but it is quite hard to detect since they don’t use it much.
Let’s move to another genre approaches which is ritual, a complex storyline narration and form of cultural value. In Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu, the series shows about a resident of a flat called Flat Seri Wangi. We could see the value of harmony in Malaysia through this series as the character have different background. There are character of Malay man that come from different state such as Terengganu (Mat Over played by Mat Over), Kelantan (Wan Ismail Golok played by Sabri Yunus), Penang (Budin played by Imuda), Perak (Pak Uda played by Allahyarham Zami Ismail and Pak Busu played by Allahyarham Mohammad Abdullah) and they also bring character from another race such as Indian (Ravi played by Sathiya and Singam played by Accapan) and Chinese (Lucy played by Angeline Tan and Suzy played by Soo San Ho). The series show about a group of different type of people living together in a harmony life. From the character itself we could see the storyline narration and cultural value. Meanwhile in Jenaka Kampung Kalut, the series that show the life of the people in the village. Due to the modernization, we could see the people in the village is no longer like how we use to visualize. We could see the ritual such as doing a meeting at the community hall, the habit of hanging out or loitering at the ‘warung’, people practice direct selling and many more. From there we can see the cultural value that they want to present to the audience.
Next is ideological. Both of this series bring the idea of gemeinschaft as both of the series is about a group of resident or community and the life of a community or resident. In Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu, we could see it as the characters live in a low cost flat, dealing with neighbors of all kind, facing common problem that the resident would face, and work together to solve the problems. It’s the same as Jenaka Kampung Kalut where the villagers connected with each other in a neighborhood, and work together in solving problem. Jenaka Kampung Kalut appears in such a modern form not like how we use to potray but it’s still brought the idea of rural community. For example, things that not originally for the villagers but due to the modernization the villagers also can have it is the hipster tailor shop #OOTD own by  the character of Bijan (Issey Fazlisham) the hipster tailor.
For me, the series really do have upgrade and always update with the modernization. But it also has something lack. The sitcom in 90s era like to make a character that come from variety ethnics or group of people such as Malay, Indian, Chinese, Mamak, Baba Nyonya and many more that could show the harmony of our country. But todays sitcom doesn’t do this us much as the 90s. I hope they could produce more series that can be enjoyed by all ethnic in Malaysia.
